Abstract
The prevalence of Obstrutive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is estimated to be 3% of all children, can be associated with a poor growth, behavioral abnormalities, neurocognitive impairment and others complications. Traditionally, adenotonsilectomiy has long been the treatment of choice, and recent results in children suggest that orthodontic treatments are important to prevent and may enlarging the nasal passages, the horizontal plane maxilaries and or the oropharyngeal airspace in children with Obstrutive Respiratory Sleep Disorders (ORSD) for news treatment in children with diagnosed of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Objective: The aim of this series cases report was to check the use of standard lateral teleradiography (tele-X-ray) as an auxiliary method for the diagnosis of ORSD in awaked children with neurocognitive impairment, and use this tele-X-ray to indicate for dentistry treatment. Methodology: Two tele-X-rays were taken of 23 children of both sexes ranging in age from 7 to 13 (average of 9.65 years), diagnosed with ADHD loking for probably area linked to ORSD. The first tele-X-ray was taken in Habitual Occlusion (HO) and the second in the Mandibular Rest position. The smallest naso-oro-hypopharyngeal respiratory empty linear spaces were measured and the data were analyzed by Descriptive Statistics and Pearson’s Correlation. Results: The analysis of the tele-X-rays revealed the presence of adenoids in 19 children (83%), and all of the presented hypertrophic tonsils. Twenty-one children (91%) presented a low lingual apex. Thirteen (56.5%) presented maxillary retrognathia, and in 9 cases (39%) this appeared to be exacerbated by mandibular retrognathia. The results of the Pearson correlation were -0.78 between the adenoids and the smallest nasopharyngeal ufs47 space. The Pearson correlation varied from -0.45 to -0.58 in the values observed for ufs47 in a comparison of with spaces between the nasopharynx and oropharynx (PAS51) when the values were measured in HO and MR. The results showed that when there is a reduction of the empty nasopharyngeal space there is an increase in the empty oropharyngeal space. Conclusions: Standard lateral radiography facilitates the diagnosis of ORSD in children with ADHD when comparing HO with MR, and it may contribute as a tool for the interdisciplinary diagnosis of these dysfunctions.
